Open Edible Gardens Weekend  – 14th & 15th November  2015……..a Transition Margaret River Event.

OEGfacebookprofileThis great weekend of exploring some of the edible gardens in the Margaret River region is on again. Local gardeners have opened their plots to the public to share ideas and inspiration.

From small plots to paddocks, private to public, ordered to eclectic, walk and talk with the gardeners and share their knowledge and experience.

Join us at Fair Harvest for a Sunday Sundowner

Tickets/programs are $15 per adult (for the whole weekend!) and available at all of the gardens.

SATURDAY 14th NOVEMBER these gardens open 9am to 1200

MR Primary School. Come and visit ‘behind the scenes’ in the Stephanie Alexander School Kitchen and Garden which teaches children to “grow, harvest, prepare and share” Garden includes veg, fruit and hens. Visit the kitchen classroom for morning tea!

Forrest Rd., MR Park in the car park on the corner of Forrest and Townview.

Combination ornamental and productive garden with free-range hens. Produce from many fruit trees and the veg garden is preserved by the owners. Terracing of sloping block includes a gabion wall.

Jane and Peter’s @ 28 Willmott Ave., MR. Park on the verge corner of Willmott and River Heights Rd. NOT outside the house (very hazardous).

Productive biodynamic vegetable and fruit areas combined with ornamental garden for B&B guests. Includes wicking beds, espaliered fruit and vines trellis to shade veg beds.

Peta’s @ 12 Elva St., Margaret River. Park on the verge or street.

SATURDAY 14th NOVEMBER these gardens open 1pm to 4pm

This small easily maintained space is designed to have a balance of veg, fruit, and chickens along with space for relaxing. Compact kitchen garden at the back door and espaliered fruit trees. Includes verge plantings.

Jane’s @ 24 Honeyeater Loop, MR. Park on verge.

Formal raised vegetable garden in the Italian style surrounded by fruit trees on a landscaped bush block.  Large sculptures created by the owner throughout the property add an artistic touch.

Paula’s @ 65 Devon Drive MR Park in cul de sac.

A lifetime of permaculture experience has been drawn on when planning this brand new rural residential space. Learn what soil and water management strategies have been put in place on this sloping 1-hectare block to ensure future success.

PB’s and Swabohdi’s @ 8 Tammar Place MR. Turn off Wallcliffe into Kevill Rd EAST and then left into Ironside, left to the end of Tammar.

SUNDAY 15th NOVEMBER these gardens open 9am to 12 noon

A small organic garden on a rear duplex block, planned to make the clever use of limited space. Extensive use of wicking beds/barrels to conserve water.  Several features to attract insects.

Lyn’s @ 9b Coronation St., Margaret River. Park on the verge.

Backyard organic garden provides space for children along with a mini ‘food forest’, hugelkultur beds and wicking barrels. Garden includes many rare and unusual edible species.

Linda’s @ 5 Bovell Ave, MR. Park in the street.

One-hectare property has been set up to feed the family and eventually the community.  Includes goats, chickens, vegetables and fruit. Sustainable practices such as hugelkultur, use of pallets to build sheds. “Barista” coffee and honey for sale.

Scott’s @ 73 Heron Ave., MR. Park in the driveway.

SUNDAY 15th NOVEMBER these gardens open 1pm to 4pm.

Very productive banana, grafted avocado and olive trees along with other produce in the backyard. When space ran out, the owners created extensive veg beds on the vacant block next door for themselves and the neighbours.

Denise and John’s @ Leschenaultia Ave., Brookfield. Turn into Brookfield Ave., then left into Leschenaultia. Park in the cul de sac.

Steeply sloping degraded block has been transformed by sustainable design. The owners are self sufficient in fruit, veg and eggs. Includes extensive espaliered/trellised fruit, extensive berry patch and wildlife habitat.

Britta’s @ 126 Ashton St., MR. Park on verge.

A kitchen garden that uses farm livestock for manuring, pest and weed control. Cellar door open for wine tasting. Wine and farm produce for sale.
